Farfaria is an amazing app that provides a perfect story time experience. Intended for kids ages 0-9, there are four levels of reading and over 800 picture books to choose from in a variety of topics. With 5 new books added each week, the app keeps expanding and ensures your child will never get bored with it!

The exploration map has different lands to choose from including: Genius Jungle, Mt Make Believe, Sing Along City, Bedtime Bluffs, and Preschool Playground. It’s easy to find different e-books to suit your child’s tastes and age group. For my two year old, we are constantly reading books developed specifically for learning words, like animal names, colours, alphabets, and numbers.

Each story has three different options for reading: Auto Play, Read to Me, or Read Myself. On Auto Play, the story reads itself completely, while Read to Me needs you to manually ‘flip the page’. My eight-year old daughter enjoys sitting on the sofa, choosing her favourite books, and takes turns reading to herself and then listening to a story being read to her.

Last week, her favourite stories were Halloween-themed, and she discovered a whole genre of ‘monster’ books, her favourites being ‘Zombie Elementary’. Farfaria has series of ebooks on their app, Zombie Elementary and The Monster Club being a few of them. All of the books are family-friendly and we had fun listening to them during dinner time.

Farfaria has something for everyone. On Adventure Island you can learn about David & Goliath, read Detective books, or learn about Mars. There are fables like The Boy Who Cried Wolf, stories about historical figures like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, silly stories on Looney Lagoon that make us laugh (The Biggest Yawn Ever is a current favourite!), and lots of children’s song with accompanying words and pictures in Sing Along City.

There are 5 different reading levels on Farfaria:

  • P – Pre-Readers (Age 0+)
  • 1 – Beginning Readers (Pre K – Kindergarten)
  • 2 – Progressing Readers (Kindergarten – Grade 2)
  • 3 – Early Fluent Readers (Grade 1 – Grade 3)
  • 4 – Fluent Readers (Grade 2 – Grade 4)

While I think the variety of books found on Farfaria is astounding (over 800!) and provides unlimited reading for kids, my daughter is in the third grade and reads ‘chapter books’. She has great reading skills and I would hope that in the future Farfaria also starts including children’s novels, so she can continue to use the app for a few more years.

This app is great for kids of any age, my two-year old adores the stories and sometimes pays more attention to them being read to him than when I read it. My eight-year old daughter asks to read books after school and the quiet time is great for her. It also brings our family together by having before bed stories on the sofa, together.

Farfaria is free to download, although you need a subscription to continue reading the books. You can have a monthly subscription at $4.99/month, or subscribe yearly for $39.99/year. You can also give a Farfaria subscription as a gift, $23.99/6 months or $39.99/12 months. An internet connection is necessary to use the app, however you can also download stories to ‘My Favorites’ to access them if you’re offline, which is useful if your tablet or iPad is only connected to WiFi. The award-winning Farfaria app is available on iTunes and Android.
