Today is the first day of spring! Finally there are hopes of sunshine and flowers and fun outdoor activities – however living on the West Coast (dubbed the Wet Coast by some!) spring also brings in endless rain… Since moving here I’ve quickly succumbed to rain boots and waterproof jackets to keep myself dry – here are my simple spring essentials to surviving the rainy weather here in the Pacific Northwest, and still looking stylish!
On a day-to-day basis, this is my momiform (a mom’s uniform, clever, isn’t it?) – it’s my go-to outfit. It’s always basic pieces in black – leggings or dark skinnies & a loose top, with a scarf wrapped around my neck. Boring? Perhaps, but it’s easy to throw together during busy and rushed mornings, and still look human! The bright rainboots perk up the outfit and the lightweight North Face jacket is waterproof yet breathable – and be sure to keep a small, colourful umbrella in your tote just in case!
On days where I have meetings in the city, or need a day-to-date type outfit, (or just have the time to put together an outfit!) I would start my outfit off with dark skinnies and throw on a nice but simple top. Add a mens-inspired watch and a scarf or necklace and you have a classic, chic look.
Spring survival additions: heeled rain-proof ankle boots allow you to look good AND step in puddles (whether by accident or in a moment of childlike pleasure), a classic trench coat and a chic fedora will keep you dry and ready to go from meetings to fab restaurants in a hot minute. I hate using an umbrella in the city (there’s a serious lack of umbrella etiquette!) so I prefer a hat or using a hood.
These classic and timeless outfits can last you ages, and a little investment goes a long way at times. I’ve had cheap rainboots that have lasted a mere month, whereas my Hunter rainboots have survived THREE long years and are just starting to show some wear now. There are items that won’t break the bank, and can be styled in different ways to look fresh again time after time.
