I have a million and one things on my to-do list, yet it feels that I have no time to do it in. Isn’t that always the way? You sit down, focused on your task, and then the phone rings, the kids start screaming or suddenly they’re hungry (didn’t I just feed them?), I need to use the bathroom, then I notice it’s dirty, so I tidy it up, by that point I forget what I’m doing and notice my nail polish is looking a bit lackluster…

It’s a horrible cycle – further made horrible by online activities like pinterest or instagram or twitter or facebook – all things that are meant to keep you ‘social’, all things that you’re ‘supposed to do’ as a blogger, all things that keep you from being productive!

Working from home is tough.

I don’t want to seem like I’m complaining, I don’t think it’s any easier to workΒ outside of the home – but there’s times when I think thatΒ being away from the house, in an actual office space might make me more focused and effective at my work.

When I’m at home, I’m not only thinking about ‘work’, I’m thinking that we’re out of toilet paper, that I need to text my husband to pick up some milk, I’m thinking about meal plans and grocery lists, about an upcoming event and what I should wear…. all things that areΒ not conducive to working!

I finally, TODAY!, have set up a home office space – notice that I said ‘space’, not a whole room to myself – and I’m hoping that working at a desk (unlike before, working on my lap on the sofa) will help me steer me in the right direction… and away from all the online time suckers that I love so much!

  • I completely relate to every word of this post. I also work from home and have a 9 month old. It is so tough. I am also easily distracted and I am always forgetting what I’m SUPPOSED to be doing. haha I need to set up an online space! I feel like it would help a lot. Congrats on your new space!

  • Ahhh… I work from home, have 3 littles under 8, and play roller derby in the evenings! But yet, here I am on the computer when I should be putting away laundry or writing that new blog post. (To be fair, the laundry basket did make it all the way to the bottom of the stairs, and I have two paragraphs of the new post typed out!). It’s noon-thirty and I have finally fed my children breakfast, mailed out two sold orders from my Etsy store, NOT taken a shower NOR changed out of my gym clothes, moved a broken lamp (ala youngest kiddo) onto the stove because I don’t know where else to put it, and done one load of laundry.

    We are so busy, yet find ourselves doing lots of nothing that takes up our whole day!!

    • I know! And then my husband comes home and asks “what did you do all day?” and I don’t even know how to answer him. I usually just say “EVERYTHING”.

  • I can totally relate. While working at home seems like a luxury (and i would prefer it) I think you’re right. Theres something about an office that I think makes you more productive. Congrats on your new office space! πŸ™‚

  • I am good at procrastinating or getting distracted too! Maybe I need to set up an office space and see if that works.

  • I completely understand this. I recently set up a desk in my space because it was almost impossible to “get in the zone” on the bed or couch!

    I have the same problem. Not focusing on one task and finishing it. Not sure I would call it procrastination however. Take right now for example. I started putting up the laundry, then stopped to write this comment. Once done I’ll finish the laundry. Or comment another post. By the end of the day tho, the laundry will be up and the comments will be done. Both tasks completed. Is the order important?

    I berated myself a lot for not doing enough, especially now that kindergarten is on summer break, but one day I listed all the things I had done and hey, it was actually a lot. Could I maybe be effer so slightly more efficient focusing? Yes, I think so. But little kids / toddlers happen.

    And yeah, I have cleared my desk a while ago to function as office space, but that doesn’t really help much πŸ˜‰

    The only thing I am trying to stay clear off are shopping sites. Those are time suckers πŸ™

    • I think as long as at the end of the day your “to-do” list gets done, then what does it matter which order it’s done in or HOW it gets done πŸ˜‰

  • I disagree. I feel productive using Twitter. I consider posting work. I teach nutrition and food literacy by curating relevant tweets. #Procrastination is different from wasting time.
