Designing a child’s bedroom is always a battle for me – the battle of making it look modern and minimal, with playful touches versus all of the toys and artwork and books that abound. I don’t have any definite rules when it comes to keeping the kid’s clutter to a minimum, but I do purge as often as I can, I take note of items that are no longer being used and spaces that could be put to better use.
Having a girl and a boy, I feel somewhat lucky that I can create two completely different styles of bedrooms. While we’re still getting the rooms together, adding the right decor and furniture, I look to design magazines and online pictures and pinterest to find items and curiosities that I think will be perfect in their respective bedrooms. Here are some modern kids bedrooms that I adore.
My favourite rooms are have a Scandinavian feel to them, very clean with white walls. I love geometric elements added to a room, whether it be a patterned wall, bedspread, or art. The mixture of grey with wood is something I am attracted to, and my little boy’s room has furniture with a mix of wood and dark greys. I want to add a pop of colour to his room, and I’m thinking it might be orange…
I also love rooms that have a touch of magic added. A child’s room isn’t a real child’s room without some added whimsy, whatever it may be – a toy, a light fixture, a playhouse – something that adds magic and imaginative play to a room is very necessary when it comes to designing a child’s room.
A modern kids bedroom must be functional as well as pleasing to the eye. There must be proper storage solutions for all of their fun games and toys, but I think there also needs to be an element of peace. Things put away in their right places, well-designed furniture pieces, mixed with magical and whimsical items creates a fun room for children to grow in.
