I Got Rid of My Scale

During the Great Purge of 2013, I got rid of my scale.

We were moving out of one big rental property into a small tiny rental, awaiting the construction to be finished on our dream home. All the “stuff” that one acquires in life was therefore being put into a storage container – all of our furniture, our off-season clothing, toys, kitchen appliances, shoes, skis, bikes, and things were being carefully placed into storage.

It was worse than moving.

Not only was I packing things away that I was hoping I wouldn’t need for the next 6 months, but the knowledge that I would then have to move them INTO my home and unpack 6 months later – it gave me nightmares.

So instead of blindly packing everything away I purged. I sold. I donated.

Anything and everything that seemed useless or unnecessary. Clothing, shoes, furniture, electronics, DVDs, Barbie dream houses – things kids hardly played with, books I never read – all the CLUTTER that one acquires was quickly sold thanks to Facebook Buy & Sell pages and Craigslist. Anything that wasn’t sold was quickly donated or recycled.

The scale was one of those items.

I am constantly reading that if you really want to lose weight then you should get rid of your scale! (examples: here, here, here, and here.) So I sold it for $10 and went along my merry way.

However!!!!

The weight didn’t magically come off. I would spend a week or two being “good” on a diet, adding a little bit of exercise, then drinking and eating out on weekends – and repeat. Since the summer I have been adding more whole foods to my diet, eating a lot less sugar but to my amazement the only pants that fit in my closet were of the yoga variety.

Why was the weight not magically coming off?

I was yo-yoing – I could tell by the way my clothes fit. One week a pair of jeans would fit, the next I was afraid I’d rip them because of the way I had ballooned.

I think to be serious about my weight loss I need to have a scale. I need to see the numbers going down, I need to see that something is working – or not working.

I understand water weight, I know muscle ways more than fat, I am not going to be jumping on my scale every 2 hours – but right now I am the largest weight I have ever been. And that’s nothing to joke about.

Getting rid of my scale might have helped me clear out my house, but it didn’t help me understand what I was doing to my body.

My husband and I are both starting a diet and exercise plan, we are both motivated to make healthy changes in our lives, and I’m hoping that I don’t struggle too much with it.

    You go girl! 2014 is going to be your year! I hate scales… they depress me. I mostly go by how I look in the mirror and adjust accordingly. But that only works 1/8 of the time. 🙂 Good Luck on reaching your goal weight!

      I think I definitely need to SEE it right now to see how big I’ve gotten and see if what I’m doing is working for me – otherwise I might keep growing!!

    Great choice!! I weigh myself only a couple times a year when I randomly step on the scale at the gym but even then, I don’t really care about the number because it’s usually well into my day, after I ate a lot and drank a lot of water so I know that’s not my true weight. If you want to weigh yourself, you should do it in the morning right when you wake up, before you go to the bathroom.

    To track progress, measure yourself (waist, hips, thighs, arms, etc) and then do it every month or so to compare. Also get your body fat tested at the gym! Personally, I just go by how my clothes fit. I have a couple pair of pants that when they are too tight, I know I am heavier than usual.

    Don’t worry about the number!! It’s added stress you don’t need in your life. Focus on eating clean and whole foods and get some physical activity. It’s more important to be healthy and happy. 🙂

      I don’t worry about the number on the scale too much, but I think i need it to keep track of my goals and keep motivated! For now at least, since I Have so much weight to drop!

    Healthy and happy sounds like a smart idea. Have you ever considered to talking to a nutritionist or a weight loss coach? A friend of mine had great success like that, helping her discover where she was going wrong emotionally with food. Good luck!! xxx

      I’ve tried a few times, I’ve had personal coaches and nutrition experts – but it has to start with me, otherwise I cheat 😉

    yes to everything katy said; that bitch knows what she’s talking about (i follow her too).

    i ditched the scale when i started my journey but we all have our ‘things’ that we need to lose weight and stay motivated so if the scale is what you need, then get one.

    My boyfriend and I are trying to make lifestyle adjustments too, it’s definitely hard to do it all at once but it’s nice to have someone else there next to you going through the same thing. I hate our scale..typically try to avoid it at all costs (though its right out in the open in our bathroom), though I hate it, it is kinda motivating for me. Anyway, good luck!
