Barbie: Celebrating Women Entrepreneurs & Business Bursary Program

Barbie

When I was a little girl I knew that when I grew up, I wanted to be the Boss. I wanted to run things, I wanted to own businesses, manage hair salons, become a lawyer, study neurology and become a brain surgeon, own a bakery, become a criminal psychologist – I changed my mind a lot! But I always believed that no matter what I wanted to become, I could do it.

One of my favourite toys growing up were my Barbie Dolls – and I lived out my dreams through them. They would be the veterinarians, the mommies, the teachers, the hair dressers, the firefighters – with my Barbie dolls, anything was possible.

The newly launched Entrepreneur Barbie is the 150th career doll, and celebrates women entrepreneurs while encouraging and empowering little girls to follow their dreams! Alongside the launch of Entrepreneur Barbie, the first-ever Barbie Business Bursary program is being introduced to inspire children not only to dream big, but to believe that those dreams can become a reality.

Barbie Business Bursary Program

The first ever Barbie Business Bursary is a national search for Canada’s Next Young Entrepreneurs, celebrating can-do spirit and designed to grow Canada’s leaders for the next generation. Canadians are invited to nominate a budding entrepreneur – yourself, children, siblings, cousins, students, or friends – under the age of 18, who demonstrates true entrepreneurial spirit.

To enter, visit the Barbie: My Dreams contest page, and share your nominee’s big dream! An elite jury panel will choose three winners to receive $2,500 Barbie Business Bursaries to fund their big ideas. Nominations are open at Barbie: My Dreams until September 1, 2014 and winners will be announced by October 17, 2014.

Entrepreneur Barbie

The Entrepreneur Barbie is a tribute to Ruth handler, Barbie’s founder who created the world’s first and iconic fashion doll for her daughter, back in 1959, to encourage her to play out her dreams. The doll is chic, dressed in her signature pink. She carries a large tote bag to fit all her business essentials – her tablet, her iphone, and her hot pink clutch. She’s well-accessorised with simple stud earrings and a lovely necklace, along with her ‘I-Mean-Business’ pointy, black pumps. Her hair is practical is a no-nonsense bouffant ponytail.

I love her look, and I love the idea that little girls will grow up knowing what an entrepreneur is because of Barbie. Want to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit in your kids? Start the conversation with a kid-friendly “What’s An Entrepreneur?” printable! Entrepreneur Barbie available on Amazon, as well as local stores like Toys’R’Us and Walmart.
