Design Inspiration: Bohemian Decor

Bohemian Home Decor

For me, a Bohemian style evokes imagery of macrame, relaxed silks, natural materials like rattan, and greenery. Bohemian decor in the home isn’t easy to accomplish because it’s not something that can be ‘styled’, it’s nomadic and natural, and it develops as time goes on. A trinket from a trip to some far away place, a gift from a friend, a vintage rug discovered beneath some rubbish – it takes time to have a truly effortless Bohemian home.

To add a boho chic style to your home, start small. Add one or two items which you absolutely love, and see how they will fit in – a good place to start is with throw cushions, a plant, a rug, or wall hanging. Try to reflect the colours already used in the room, or alternatively bring in a pop of colour that complements the room.

Look for comfort in fabrics, used leather goods, things that stand the test of time and weather as they get older. There is comfort in patina. Layer textures, colours, and patterns to create a unique look – the trick to layering is to start with one colour as your base (red, orange, green – pick one), and find that colour in everything you layer for a connection between the items.

Use nature in your style. Plants like a cactus, a money tree, hanging plants, or the ever-popular succulent bring a love of the earth into your home. It adds a punch of colour to a monochromatic room or can ground a colourful one. Don’t do fake. Seriously. I have a black thumb, I’ve considered bringing in fake plants, but I won’t do it either.

Decorate your space with items you love, you treasure, and you cherish. Don’t go to Anthropologie and pick up everything with the description ‘Boho’ on it. If you keep your eyes open, Bohemian decor will find you. Look in vintage shops, visit parts of town you wouldn’t normally because they’re out of the way, and take many trips. Bohemian style is nomadic and worldly, it’s eclectic and authentic to you. There is no one right way to decorate for a Boho style.

Create something beautiful. Take a class in weaving. Make baskets and wall hangings. Collect things that hold meaning to you, curate them, and display them in unique ways that make you smile. Bring colour and light and freeness to your life. Blankets that keep you warm, rugs that hold mysteries from a past unknown, and colourful pots that hold plants that will grow into your future.

In my home I’m craving some colour, warmth, and history… I love having a minimal, modern, Scandinavian feel to my house, and I want to add a touch of Bohemian decor to my home. I think I’ll start with a plant, and maybe a rug, and see where it takes me!
