What You Need to Know About Coconut Water

I have always loved the idea of coconut water – it’s super hydrating and full of amazing health benefits – but I slowly came to realize that not all coconut waters are created equally. While some big brands are simply jumping on the coconut water wagon, there are brands that carefully source their coconuts and aim for the purest flavour possible.

Cocozia is an exciting coconut water company that recently reached out to me and I jumped at the chance to try a new brand. In the past, I’ve tried coconut waters that were barely drinkable, but Cocozia is delicious and really quenches your thirst. It has a light flavour with only a touch of naturally-derived sweetness.

What is coconut water?

Coconut water is the juice that is found inside a young and tender coconut. The clear liquid found inside is sweet, sterile, and composed of unique chemicals such as sugars, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, enzymes, amino acids, cytokine, and photo-hormones.

The prime age for a coconut is 5-7 months old for the best tasting coconut water. Each coconut contains about 200 to 1000 ml of water, depending on type and size. Different species of coconut palms yield different tasting coconuts, and different regions show to have variations on taste and flavour as well.

Pure coconut water is best

The best coconut water comes straight from the source – a 6 month old green coconut that’s hanging from a  tree in the Philippines. What’s the next best option? Look for coconut water that’s pure, organic, and with no additives or preservatives. Although raw coconut water has the most nutrients and minerals, unpasteurized coconut water can be dangerous when kept at room temperature or higher.

The coconut water from Cocozia is organic, kosher, and gently pasteurized, which means it is pasteurized at a low temperature for a longer time to retain as much nutrients and enzymes as possible.

Great source of electrolytes = uber hydration

Coconut water is a great source of electrolytes like potassium, making it a healthy alternative to sports drinks which are laden with added sugars, chemicals, and extra calories. Studies recommend using coconut water for rehydration during and after exercise.

Did you know that pre-World War 2, coconut water was used in IV hydration in the US, and in some places they still do in extreme cases? In India, coconut water is used to rehydrate babies that suffer from diarrhea-induced dehydration.

Beauty benefits

Choosing natural, unflavoured coconut water can benefit your skin and hair. Coconut water improves moisture and lipid content in the skin, giving you a glow, as well as boosts oxygen promoting proper breathing of the skin, giving you a healthy and flawless complexion. High levels of antioxidants in coconut water also combats signs of aging like wrinkles, blemishes and fine lines. Applying coconut water onto affected skin areas every night before going to bed may help with acne, age spots, wrinkles, stretch marks, cellulite, and eczema.

Not only is it great for your skin, it also helps strengthen and condition  your hair. Coconut water improves blood circulation in the scalp, strengthening hair follicles and preventing hair loss. Massaging your hair with coconut water, and rinsing your hair with coconut water after washing gives you shiny and silky hair, as well as treating dry and itchy scalp conditions.

Health benefits

Coconut water provides hydration for your body, but also benefits weight loss and boosts your metabolism. It improves insulin secretion and utilization of blood glucose levels, thereby helping to control diabetes. It can reduce vomiting, nausea, acid reflux, and heartburn problems.

High levels of potassium and magnesium in coconut water can help people suffering from blood pressure and cardiac diseases.  Studies show that when you increase potassium through adding fruit and vegetables—including coconut water—you have lower blood pressure, a better quality of life, and reduced medical issues. Yes, you can find potassium in bananas too – but I always get sick from bananas! Coconut water eases my stomach and boosts my potassium – bonus!

Cocozia Packaging

Cocozia is a pure, organic choice

I was lucky enough to try Cocozia, an organic coconut water that lists “Organic Coconut Water” as its’ only ingredient. The owner travelled the world trying to find the best tasting coconuts, and decided to harvest young, green coconuts in the Philippines for the source of Cocozia. It tastes fresh, clean, and smooth.

I really enjoyed the taste of Cocozia, which was surprising because I like very few of the coconut water offerings currently available on the market. Cocozia was easy to drink, delicious and not too sweet, and my children enjoyed it as well. It’s the perfect beverage for rehydration after a long hike or a sweaty bike ride. I loved coconut water as a kid. Then as I got older I couldn’t believe there were so many brands available. I tried four or five and gave up because they weren’t good at all. I don’t know what brand my mom bought when I was younger so I’m going to try this one you’ve reviewed. I never realized the health benefits from coconut water.

I still have not developed a taste for coconut water; unless it is directly served out of a freshly cracked coconut, I am not a fan. But I will give this product a try. Thanks.

Personally I am not a huge fan of coconut water. After reading that I might have to give it a second chance.
